Whilst this spectacle is undoubtedly the reason most would make a visit to this part of the world, Morukuru does an incredible job of cheating an experience that is not only exceptionally comfortable but amazing for children.

I was sitting in the upstairs lounge at Morukuru beach lodge, a stunningly special place in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa's Western Cape. Maddie, myself and the kids had driven down from Cape Town to experience what we all knew would be a magical place.

Every year between June and October, the whales grace these shores to give birth before moving to warmer waters off Mozambique and then returning to the Antarctic. A migration of epic proportions. Southern Wrights, humpbacks, dolphins and even killer whales are the larger animals in a melting pot of sealife.

Whilst this spectacle is undoubtedly the reason most would make a visit to this part of the world, Morukuru does an incredible job of cheating an experience that is not only exceptionally comfortable but amazing for children. Throughout a lifetime in the travel industry I have visited many many lodges and hotels and there are always subtle things that separate the good from the great. At Morukuru, our guide Corne was an experience in himself, his boundless enthusiasm rendered him the male Mary Poppins which coupled with his deep knowledge of the local fauna and flora provided our children with not only the opportunity to learn and explore with an expert but to really deepen their connection with nature through the curiosity Corne was able to catalyze in them. This is always something Maddie and I place huge emphasis on when we travel.

So by the time the dust settled on our visit, after hours of sandboarding, whale watching, shell collecting, fynbos exploring and hot tub chilling, we made our way back to Cape Town, left wondering how soon we could get back.

Morukuru beach lodge and the nearby Beach house can be taken exclusively for larger groups or per room for couples and smaller groups but large or small, the service, the activities, the food and drink and of course: watching hundreds of whales go about their annual ocean rotation make Morukuru one our absolute top recommendations for guests from close or far.
